A while back I was commissioned to illustrate an article on freedom of the press. It’s always interesting coming up with conceptual ideas for editorial work. I love this article by illustrator Nate Williams on generating ideas, and use similar methods to come up with visualisations of articles.
This article, written by Richard Schweid, focuses on a Spanish law to allow journalists more freedom in accessing governmental information. You can read the article on the Barcelona Metropolitan’s website.
After doing some word searches in google for ideas on freedom, freedom of the press and journalists, it became a matter of combining various symbols together. The dove, typically associated with freedom, I drew caged in information. With no access to the key, the journalists struggle at the bottom of the illustration to reach the vital ingredients they need for their writing.
Thanks to Aisling Callinan for the commission.
